gemmalouisemarsh:

Final design illustrations from myAssassin’s Creed: Golden Age project. In this project, I designed costumes and characters for a theoretical AC game or tie-in film, in an era which had not appeared in the series so far. I chose the Golden Age Of Piracy - the early 18th century. I started the first part of this project back in September and was halfway through completing it when we learnt that AC3 is set in the late 1700s; something like 30 or so years after I set my project!

The three characters are:

  • The Noble Assassin- the daughter of a nobleman and a member of the Brotherhood by birth. It worked with the general AC aesthetic to design her robes - red, creams and whites, and the Assassin robe shape are apparent. She also has a coat not shown here with the iconic pointed hood.
  • The Vigilante - a lone-wolf character who is out for herself. She works alone, and her costume was designed to reflect her dubious allegiance. I chose blue, grey and black to seperate her from the Assassin characters, but the shape of her shirt mirrors the Noble’s robe.
  • The Privateer - in the latter half of the Golden Age of Piracy, as the frequency of pirate attacks lessened, Europe began to downsize its navies. The Privateer is an ex-naval sailor who was recruited by the Brotherhood when he left. He retains a lot of military aesthetic, keeping his coat and sword.
OOAK Doll Project - Alena Shepard [Mass Effect] - Step 3

So a while back I saw the artist’s concept of the Femshep Bishoujo Statue and jokingly said I should use my doll-creating abilities to make my own Commander Shepard figure because that statue turns arguably one of the strongest, most badass female characters in games right now in to that thing, T&A pose and all.
At the time it was just a joke, but then I decided to go through with the idea since I have learnt a method of constructing armour from foam by heat-forming it. For starters, I am using my own main Femshep Alena as a basis.
For those who don’t know, Mass Effect allows you to create Commander Shepard from scratch, deciding face shape, hair style, eye and skin colour - even if s/he is male or female).

Finally gotten around to painting! She isn’t perfect, but she is much better than my earlier attempts.
Next up, hair cutting!

Little rough sketch for a fanfic/art project I and a friend are currently doing.
EDIT bah meant to submit this to my art blog. Welp.
(As it happens though if anyone has any really epic screenshots of any of the ME squaddies I’d love to see em. Not that I don’t have folders full of the things, but any refs are great!)

OOAK Doll Project - Alena Shepard [Mass Effect] - Step 2

So a while back I saw the artist’s concept of the Femshep Bishoujo Statue and jokingly said I should use my doll-creating abilities to make my own Commander Shepard figure because that statue turns arguably one of the strongest, most badass female characters in games right now in to that thing, T&A pose and all. For those of you who have never played Mass Effect, just look at the game pic in the bottom right in comparison.

The first step was to modify the doll’s face to resemble hers.

On the previous post I noted that my next step was to create a full cast of the doll so I can make a more heat resistant copy; since I want to make progress with her, I have started modifying the doll as I am having problems acquiring the materials to create the mold.

In which case, the second step is to add hair to the doll.

I have included a couple of refs to show the hairstyle I am attempting to recreate. For dolls, the hair is rooted in too long, and cut and styled later.

  • Image 1 & 2 - hair refs
  • Image 3 - the hair parting was drawn on roughly as it is not a centre part.
  • Image 4 - the hairline is rooted first with tightly packed roots. I use the tension rooting method which involves stabbing the hair into the vinyl from the outside. It is held in the doll’s head by the tension of the vinyl, hence the name.
  • Image 5 - the hair is built up around the head. The next two rows after the hairline are close together but not as tightly packed. The rows after that are more spaced out, and roots are placed strategically to fill gaps. Along the part, the hair is rooted tightly again, leaving a space for the part.
  • Image 6 - the part is rooted in a zig-zag pattern. The hair which lies on the left side of the head is rooted onto the right side of the gap left for the part, and vice versa, to create the crossed over look seen here.
  • Image 7 - boiling water is poured over the head and hair to set it. While still wet it is shaped gently away from the face to begin styling.

Tomorrow: Adding more hair if there’s any gaps when dry. If not… face up time! For shorter hair styles, I like to leave hair long for the faceup so that it can be tied back easily.

Part of my Assassin’s Creed: Golden Age project for university.

Assassins set in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy. This is part of the costume for the Privateer character, an ex-naval sailor who is now part of the Brotherhood.

Uses actual naval buttons, braid and dolphin pin.

Coat is constructed of melton wool mix fabric, faux white suede and satin with gold Mylar braiding.

This is the exact thing I pictured Polly Perks wearing!

If by Polly Perks you mean Discworld Polly Perks then oh my don’t be sorry (even if that sorry is just in your tags :D).

The art on the book cover has the Regiment in very 18th-century-Redcoats-looking uniforms, very much in this style. It even has a pair a of white breeches to go with it :D

Aw, thanks for the kind words!
In that case, let me amend my ‘sorry’ to:

(I had drawn her and Maladict using similar uniforms for reference, but they were mostly paintings, so it was really cool to see your costume - a ‘real’ version) :D

Ah! I love that! I’ve always adored Maladict since the first time I read MR (and I’ve read it a few times!).

But thank you! Appropriately enough for Polly… this is actually a costume for a guy, but the only mannequin I had at home is female :D

Ever wanted to see my work process?

Probably not, but here it is anyway.

Work in progress snaps of a figure drawing test done as part of my uni work. Drawn with ref, the right-hand pose on this stock photo by SenshiStock.

I decided to give her different hair and she came out looking like my Femshep. Ooops.

Steps:

1. Blocking out the base skeleton with Prismacolor Copy-Not Blue

2. Creating undersketch by blocking in body forms with 8H pencil and refining the shapes with a 3H pencil.

3. Using a mechanical pencil loaded with HB lead to start defining the figure.

4. Adding in basic shadows with 4B pencil.

5. Digital colouring practice (oh my!)

The first step was to modify the doll’s face to resemble hers.

One of Obitsu’s default heads, the 03 head, is very similar in shape to my Alena’s, apart from the nose shape. I used a dremel to sand away at the bridge of the nose. Before and after pictures are given above, and a comparison of the modded head to a screenshot of her.

I realise the shape of Alena’s brow in the screenshot is much more pronounced. I did not want to sand too much on the doll’s face to avoid damaging the vinyl. However I am happy with the result; she’s actually not in perfect profile on the screenshot either.

The next step is to create a plaster cast of the doll’s full body so I can create a resin copy. This is so I can heat-form the foam armour panels without risking damage to the plastic and vinyl that the doll is made from.
